For decades, medical microwave ablation systems have utilized magnetrons as their primary high-frequency energy source. While cost-effective, magnetron technology presents significant engineering and clinical limitations that are driving the industry toward solid-state alternatives.

The Constraints of Magnetron Technology: Magnetrons are vacuum tube devices that require high-voltage power supplies (often exceeding several kilovolts), complicating system design and safety compliance. More critically, as the magnetron's internal temperature fluctuates during prolonged ablation procedures, its operating frequency drifts. This spectral instability leads to unpredictable energy deposition and reduced repeatability in clinical outcomes.

The Advantages of Solid-State Power Amplifiers (SSPA): The integration of Solid-State Power Amplifiers (SSPA) represents a fundamental architectural upgrade. Driven by advanced RF semiconductor chips, SSPAs operate on safe, low-voltage DC power (typically 28V to 50V). They utilize Phase-Locked Loop (PLL) or Direct Digital Synthesizer (DDS) technologies to generate an exceptionally pure and stable continuous wave (CW).

Because the frequency remains locked regardless of operating duration or thermal load, SSPAs eliminate frequency drift entirely. Combined with a Mean Time Between Failures (MTBF) that significantly surpasses that of vacuum tubes, solid-state amplification is establishing the new standard for reliability, precision, and regulatory compliance in medical energy platforms.
